"And it may sound crude it may sound callous but it's factual. If you did worry about casualties, too much or at all, you just wouldn't win. I was six years in the infantry in the AIF, in the 2/2nd Battalion and the 2/1st Battalion. So I'm a fairly experienced infantry soldier, from captain to lieutenant colonel. And I can't honestly say that you could afford either for yourself or your soldiers or, and everybody shares that view they know that, that casualties are inevitable, and they got to be accepted whether it's your best friend or not. And you accept them in the best spirit you can."
