World War I

"...he had about 4 or 5 billy cans that he was obviously taking water back to the troops and he offered me a couple of these to help to carry ... to help him carry them back not knowing of course that I wasn't one of him and that was the time I decided that I had better do something about not being recognised and that I was one of them and I had decided then that if I was confronted by any of them I would act as though I was troppo. I would just sort of roll my eyes and stuck my tongue out and sort of staggered away and he sort of looked at me and thought oh the poor devil in Japanese of course and that happened on quite a few occasions where I actually met them on the track. I did the same thing."
