"On one occasion I was resting one day and there were about 20, 20 or 30 of them came into the area. There were trees all through it not dense but they were sparse but they were trees and I was sitting there with my back to a tree and about 20 of these Japanese came in and they sat down with their packs and just took out their little pans and were boiling rice and I was ... almost completely surrounded by them and I decided to actually try to get away as carefully as I could and I sort of backed back on my haunches and stood up and looked down ... Japanese soldier just sitting there with a rifle across his knees cleaning his rifle. He just looked up at me as much as you know what the hell are you doing here or who are you or something or he mightn't even have registered I don't know but I just walked away very gingerly away and moved away from them."
