World War I

"It was quite an experience being down there amongst them being strafed by your own mates and these bullets would be coming down like that and they'd be spurting up the sand and the Japs who were involved who were in the area they'd be screaming their heads off and rushing through the jungle. It is a very terrifying experience actually. Anyway they used to clear out when these raids were on ... up to the hills just at the back and I managed to get into a Japanese tent and I got a pair of trousers and a shirt. I found some saki in a little trap door under the floor but I didn't drink any of it though but I did get some atabrin and that tended to send me a bit yellow too probably and I was growing a beard."
