World War I

"For some unknown reason to me it must have been, nature must have been telling me something but there was a bomb crater about oh I suppose it would be about 12 foot wide and about 6 foot deep, a bomb crater filled with water and I slid down into the bomb crater and I just lay in that all day and sucked the water through the sand on the side of the crater and I must have not knowing it but I must have achieved the object of having, getting fluid back into my body through the pores of my skin sufficiently to counteract the shock and the loss of blood and I was able to just walk out of the bomb crater and I felt you know really fit. I was fit at the time and I was really fit. And medical experts when I got back to Australia after this whole episode conferred on the matter and none of them could really come up with any other, with any other theory than that, that that was what I achieved."
