World War I

"... and then when there was an heavy stunt on we had our own ambulance because our OC was a doctor, we were then called in to totally cover the field ambulance and do the stretcher bearing in field at the dressing station, field dressing station... and ah that didn't happen at all fortunately but when it did it was pretty stressful. At Passchendele for instance we had a very long time, it was 72 hours there non-stop. You used to drop down on the floor and then they'd roll you over their feet generally had stretcher bearers and you had to be up again and you had to be young.

We had one chap in there, he was 35, he packed it in, he couldn't do it - he said this old so and so shouldn't be here. But when you are young you can take it generally but it is - Passchendele was a horror, an absolute horror."
