Korea

"Reg never snivelled. I never heard Reg complain about being an aboriginal or the treatment he got. Reg regarded himself as a man equal to any and he was prepared to prove it if you wanted to argue about it. He was the same as any other officer. There was no colour in his eyes, it was in other people's eyes. On one occasion I went over to the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders to visit the company commander on my right and I was leaving he pulled me aside and said how come you've got an American second in command and he imagined the only dark people in Korea, officers would be Afro Americans. I had completely forgotten that Reg was other than ... anything unusual about him."
