"From Vet River we marched to the Zand River where they made another great stand, but were of course, outflanked and defeated. From Zand River to Kroonstad to Vaal River. Here they made no stand, but about ten miles out of Johannesburg they made a three days big fight of it. I was with General French in that fight, on the left flank again, and here is a cavalry charge. I had my horse's inside torn out by a shell, and save for a nasty buster, I escaped unhurt, caught another horse and finished the charge.."
