The role is different, but the danger is still clear and present. The same themes that run through 100 years of conflict, mateship, homesickness, pride, fair play and humour, are just as apparent in our stories about Peacekeeping. The tradition of sending artists to capture images of trouble spots is also continued. The results are stark reminders that the pen may be mightier than the sword, but the artist's brush can be more powerful than both.

Marine artist Ian Hansen has a deep love of the sea and ships. He began painting them in water colours when he was eight and graduated to oils at the age of 11. He joined the Royal Australian Navy at 15 and served for 12 years, including service on HMAS Sydney in 1967-68 during the Vietnam War.
